The third mobile platform is here. HarmonyOS 2.0 connects devices in one Super Device

Huawei today announced a global version of the Harmony OS 2.0 system in China, which will run some existing, but mainly future devices, brands. Today’s premiere of the system indicated that the Harmony OS has a really big overlap, because we will not only see it with smartphones, but also with tablets or smart watches. And it is in the two mentioned categories that the new operating system will have its premiere.

Welcome to a competitor of Android

Huawei has entered a new era without Google, which means that there is direct competition for Android. But we must add with one breath that many ordinary users may not even notice the visual differences compared to the EMUI extension on Android. The settings take the form of sorting logic, there is a top bar with shortcuts, a page with the last running applications …

The distributed system itself is designed for a whole range of devices, from watches and tablets to smartphones, smart cars to the IoT segment. The system can also run on devices that have only 128kB of RAM, so it is very scalable. The distributed framework relies mainly on the functionality of Super Device. And while on smartphones you combine different software to get the most out of it, on Huawei you will combine new hardware!

Within the so-called Harmony OS Control Panel (analogy of the slide-out bar on Android) you have an overview not only of notifications, but also here you will find shortcuts. In addition, your other devices with their current status are listed here. Huawei creates a kind of “super device” with which you can work together. To connect two devices, simply drag the balloon of one of them to your phone’s icon. This eliminates the lengthy process of pairing, authentication and subsequent connection. We don’t know the limit on the number of connected devices yet.

The super device rules everyone

The super device can be anything, a phone connected to a tablet or watch, a computer connected to a telephone, or several interconnected telephones filming a single scene. And you can seamlessly switch between them and choose the ideal shot. Depending on the types of merged devices, the Harmony OS Control Panel shows you the options and options available. And developers don’t have to worry about anything, one universal code is enough for Super Devices.

Another interesting feature of the system is the service center, in which they are registered so-called Atomic Services . These are the basic components of a distributed system that can be used to easily move content between devices. On the tablet, you can find the application from your phone among the running applications and you can continue exactly where you left off on your phone. In addition, you can share Atomic Services, just like you share links to websites on Android today.

KOMENTÁŘ: Huawei končí s Androidem. Harmony OS nebude tak zásadní změna, jak by se dalo čekat

Home screen According to the manufacturer, Harmony OS is clearer and can be better organized. If you swipe up on the apps, so-called service widgets will appear, offering quick features without having to open “full” apps at all. And if you like widgets, you can move them straight to a free space and display them permanently between applications. Huawei has prepared its own HarmonyOS Sans font for the system, which will be used across all devices.

Background applications run continuously

HarmonyOS Connect , in turn, allows you to quickly connect your smartphone by touching it to your smart home device. Huawei mentions Midea (oven) or Haier (refrigerator) brands, but also adds that these devices must run Harmony OS. And that will probably last some Friday.

Security Harmony OS has taken over privacy and security technologies from the EMUI superstructure. Collaborative verification is provided by a telephone (face scan) with the watch you have on your wrist. The files stored in the phone are managed by categories, Huawei states that even after a year and a half of using a device with Harmony OS, the system, resp. data read and write speed, as fast as when purchasing a new device. Even if the internal memory is almost full. Here, Huawei took on Android, which is slowing down over time. And the thread didn’t stay dry even on Apple.

In terms of battery life, Harmony OS should surpass even iOS. Phones should last longer than iPhones when playing challenging games. Huawei has achieved this by taking care of scene rendering, both the graphics chip and the processor. In addition, applications you have previously used are not terminated or hibernated in the background and continue to run in a restricted state. So if you return to the web page you read, you’ll be exactly where you left off, while on Android the page will reload, and you’ll have to look for the position where you left off again.

The system Harmony OS 2.0 will be the first to appear on the Huawei Watch 3 smart watch and the MatePad tablet. The schedule of updates of existing devices, especially smartphones, on the Harmony OS goes quite deep into history, the most modern updated models will be the series Mate 9 from 2016!

Update for up to one hundred older phones

As of today, it is possible to update to Harmony OS in China series Mate 40, P40, Mate 30 and tablets MatePad Pro. Mate20 , will be added in the third quarter Nova 6, Nova 7, Nova 8 and MatePad tablets. In the last quarter of this year, the update will be waiting for Mate 20 X, P30 or at P30 Pro. But this does not end the excursion into mobile history. Harmony OS will reach even older devices in the first half of next year – P20, Mate) 20, P10, Mate 10 and also in turn Mate 9.
